The world is changing rapidly. So is the donor funding environment. A recent study by Lilly Family School of Philanthropy shows there was a 3.4% decline in charitable giving from individuals in 2018. However, donations from grants and corporations saw an increase of 7.3% and 5.4% respectively during the same period.
While this may seem fairly good at first, keep in mind that nearly 80% of charitable donations come from individuals. Taking this into account, the startups nonprofit fundraising market doesn’t seem to have a promising future.
Some attribute this decline to the changes in laws, while others point to the volatility of the markets.
Whatever the reason may be, the takeaway here is that startups nonprofits will need to work harder to raise money in the coming times.
As expected, non-profit founders are driven by the desire to serve their communities, to transform lives, to make the world a better place. However, in order to achieve this, non-profits must learn to fundraise effectively.
Fundraising is important for the survival of the organization, expansion and development, reducing dependency, building constituency and creating a viable and sustainable organization.
Most founders assume they are prepared for the fundraising process. Some focus on grant writing despite having no structures to support this strategy. Others opt to hire advisers to manage their fundraising portfolio. For majority, they do not know where to start, what to do, yet they continue spending their own resources including money and time to keep their organization a float.
If you are a nonprofit founder looking to improve your organization’s fundraising strategy and bring in new streams of revenue, the first step to ensuring success is to lay a strong fundraising infrastructure. This will create a solid foundation on which to build your fundraising strategies.
Though fundraising may be hard especially at the start, the future is very promising. The current funding environment is particularly becoming very favorable for the local actors. There is a new push for international funding to be decentralized to reach more and more local actors. This means that non-profit founders should focus on building their organizations to position them to take advantage of such policies.
On the other hand, the potential for domestic resource mobilization in cash, in kind and in volunteer time is rapidly increasing. Middle classes in many countries including Kenya are growing and are becoming an increasing source of income and other forms of support for local non-profits. Also, more and more companies have taken their responsibilities towards society through corporate social responsibility.
Having said that, the reality is that fundraising is a long-term endeavor and success does not come overnight. It takes time, effort and persistence to convince a donor to fund your program. It is said that fundraising is not for faint hearted.
In-deed, if not well planned, fundraising can leave you feeling emotionally and physically drained with little or no energy to run the organization. This may result in poor performance as your volunteers and employees may lose their morale and leave.
In short, the effects can cripple a struggling startup nonprofit organization.
For a long time, non-profits have viewed fundraising from a lens of being helped by international donors. Fundraising has been reduced to writing grant proposals to international donors and from big corporates to support non-profits’ agenda. While this is a big part of it, it is not the only path and more so, it is not the starting point.
Founders MUST change their mindsets and look at fundraising with a different lens. There is need to adopt different strategies that will help our non-profits to grow. There is need to think about local fundraising, how to tap on resources that are within our reach, even as we seek to get funded by international donors.
Failure to change our mindsets and to re-think our strategies will cripple our startup nonprofits. This means we will not be able to achieve our missions and visions of serving the needy and vulnerable people in our society. We will not be able to transform lives and make the world a better place. In short we will not be able to actualize our dreams!
Though donor resources are limited and in great demand from competing needs, many non-profits continue to receive huge amounts of funds to carry on with their missions.
The question is, what is it that they are doing right?
Basically, for you to get funded, you need to stand out among many. In other words, there are things that you must do right. As a starting point, you need to put in place a fundraising infrastructure to support your efforts!
